As you all know, I love sports and I love barracking for Australia. In tennis we are sorely lacking any quality Australian players. Can we just bring back Pat already! Pat Rafter that is, not Cash. I have therefore been forced to look outside of our shores for someone to cheer for. I did not have to look very hard. For years I have been a fan of Federer, for both his performance on the court and for his demeanor off it and this afternoon I was not disappointed. There are no words to describe the five-setter that I just watched. I'll give it a red-hot go though - unbelievable, awesome, nail-biting, ferocious - just to name a few. We always expect Federer to breeze through in straight sets, however today something was off in the beginning and he went down two sets to love. We were left wondering what the? He hung in there in the third set and halfway through, the tide turned. Whether it was Berdych's hamstring (which he received treatment for) or whether it was just the fact that he choked! You may think that I am being harsh - but even he mimicked 'choking' on the court. In a thrilling five-setter Federer fought back tooth and nail to cinch it. He has only come back from two sets down to love, three times in the past and may I say - thank god for the fourth. He showed that in grand slam tennis, you cannot give up and you cannot give in to fear of your opponent, as Berdych did. Although ranked 20th, Berdych has only ever been as high as number 9, and if he continues to play as he did today, he will most certainly not get any higher. Federer's performance today was inspiring, although I certainly hope that he doesn't take us to five sets for the rest of the tournament. Whaddya say - would Federer be an honorary Australian, this Australia Day long weekend. I vote YES!!
