6 days to go... PDF Print E-mail

At the moment is it all cricket, cricket, cricket - and yes it has been a thrilling summer of cricket, I am the first to admit that.

Congrats to the Proteas, by the way.

The focus will soon shift though, recently the first annual Brisbane International was held and I for one, would have loved to go and next year I hope to be there with bells on.

One of my favourite sporting events is starting in 6 days. The Australian Open.

If I had the chance to take my annual leave each year in January, I would most definitely take it over the two weeks that the Australian Open is held.

Everyone knows that my all-time favourite sport is Rugby, but tennis comes a close second. I can think of nothing better than spending two weeks watching old guns and new hot-shots battle it out all day and well into the night.

There is no substitute for a grueling five setter that finishes at 4am.

While I always barrack for the Aussies in any sporting arena, it is no secret that we don't have a ton of tennis hopefuls and as much as the public loves Bec and Lleyton, his tennis is just not up to par.

Therefore focus has shifted to the international draw cards that flock to the Australian Open.

This year we will be watching the king of tennis - Roger Federer, hoping that he is over his slump and can come back and take Australian Open number 4.

Other names to watch out for are: Novak Djokovic, Marcos Baghdatis, James Blake, Andy Roddick, Casey Dellacqua, Ana Ivanovic, Andy Murray, Amelie Mauresmo, Rafael Nadal (duh), David Nalbandian, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, the William's sisters (of course).

The countdown is on.... Bring it on baby!

So as my friends will know, whenever I want to watch anything that isn't part of your basic free-to-air schedule, I have to watch it in my study on my computer.

Which c'mon face it - is pretty much everything that I watch!

NO MORE

Christmas this year was especially fruitful for me, Flotoonie and SWMBO decided to offer me a choice of pressies - I know just that option makes me lucky!

Well wait til you hear what the choices were!

Option 1: money voucher (redeemable at any store) - I mean who doesn't like a money voucher?

Option 2: 100cm rear projection TV, in near-new condition (along with it's own table and power board)

A tough choice I hear you say?

Are you delusional?

There clearly was NO CHOICE to be made.

If you don't know what I decided - bugger off and stop reading this blog, you obviously do not know me AT ALL!

BIG XOX Flotoonie and SWMBO - THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Shambles PDF Print E-mail

Shambles - there is no other word to describe the 80 minutes of aimless running around that the wallabies took part in this morning.

Flotoonie has a quote that he trots out at sporting events and it totally fits in this instance:

The Wallabies did not win that match, the Frogs lost it!

Some may say that I am being too harsh on them, however the time for coddling is long past. Yes we are still 3 years away from the next world cup - however the way that we play now and the results that we gain directly influence on possible pool allocations.

I used to think that as long as we won a match it would all be good. This is an illusion that the promoters of the game (well this is a whole other debate - cause seriously how much do you really hear about rugby union anymore in today's society) like to feed to us in the hopes that we will continue to boost their ticket sales.

I have come to realise that there is much more than just scraping by with a win - the team needs to be able to play quality rugby for the full 80.

After the match against the poms, I read several articles where Stirling Mortlock and Robbie Deans admitted that there were issues with the team being able to play more than just 20 minutes of quality rugby.

It is not enough just to admit the problem (while all self-help guru's will tell you it certainly is the first step to recovery); action now needs to be taken.

In follow-up of my previous blog - I wondered about the integrity of the french players and while they did not disappoint (at least one sin bin for the match). It was more than disappointing to see George Smith downgrade to their level.

It was pure luck that we didn't play a man down the entire match due to his antics.

All I can say at this point is:

Ship up boys or there will be no one to play for!
